NX-P1300DUBK vs. NX-P1300AU
The NX-P1300AU is the analog-only version of the same form factor. If your team operates entirely on analog frequencies and has no plans to migrate to digital, the NX-P1300AU is a simpler choice. However, the NX-P1300DUBK’s digital capability is a future-proof investment—digital licenses can be added later if your operation grows or your site adds a Kenwood NEXEDGE digital infrastructure. Note that the analog-only NX-P1300AU also offers slightly longer battery life with the KNB-45L (approximately 15 hours vs. 11.5 hours) due to the reduced processing load of analog-only operation.
NX-P1300DUBK vs. NX-P1300NU
The NX-P1300NU is the same digital/analog dual-mode UHF radio in a standard color. The NX-P1300DUBK is identical in performance but in black, which some industries (hospitality, security, corporate) prefer for a more discreet professional appearance.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the NXDN digital mode and analog mode on this radio?
The NX-P1300DUBK supports both FM analog and NXDN digital operation.
In analog mode, the radio operates like a standard FM business radio with QT/DQT squelch codes and a 16-code voice inversion scrambler for basic privacy.
In NXDN digital mode, audio is encoded using AMBE+2™ vocoder technology with forward error correction. This provides cleaner audio at weak signal levels, more efficient use of spectrum (6.25 kHz channel spacing available), and NXDN 15-bit digital encryption for communications security.
The radio can be programmed with a mix of analog and digital channels within the same zone, allowing gradual migration or mixed-fleet operation.
Can the NX-P1300DUBK communicate with other Kenwood or non-Kenwood radios?
In analog FM mode, the NX-P1300DUBK is compatible with any other UHF analog radio programmed to the same frequency and QT/DQT code—regardless of brand—as long as the channel spacing is compatible (12.5 kHz or 25 kHz).
In NXDN digital mode, the radio is compatible with other Kenwood NEXEDGE radios using the NXDN protocol. NXDN is not cross-compatible with DMR, P25, or other digital protocols without a gateway or protocol bridge.
If you have an existing mixed fleet, contact our team with your current radio models and we can advise on compatibility before you order.
What does the IP54/55 rating mean, and does it cover submersion?
IP54 means the radio is protected against dust ingress (no full seal required, but dust must not enter in harmful quantities) and water splashed from any direction.
IP55 means the same dust protection plus resistance to water jets from any direction—a stronger protection level than IP54.
To achieve the IP54/55 rating, the 2-pin connector cover must be installed on the radio, or the KMC-45D speaker microphone must be attached with its locking bracket.
Neither IP54 nor IP55 covers submersion. Do not submerge the NX-P1300DUBK in water. For submersion-rated radios, see options rated IP67 or IP68.
How do I program the NX-P1300DUBK?
The NX-P1300DUBK is programmed using Kenwood’s KPG programming software and a compatible programming cable (sold separately).
Some features—including VOX sensitivity, Second PTT, battery saver, and the 7-color LED indicator—require PC programming and cannot be configured from the front panel alone.
Once a radio is programmed, you can use the optional cloning cable to copy all settings to additional NX-P1300DUBK units quickly, which simplifies large fleet deployments.
For assistance with programming setup, contact our team.
What is the actual battery life, and is there an extended battery option?
Kenwood rates the standard KNB-45L 2,000 mAh battery at approximately 11.5 hours on a standard 5-5-90 duty cycle (5% transmit, 5% receive, 90% standby) in NXDN digital mode.
Real-world life will be shorter in high-transmit environments. For longer shifts, the optional KNB-69L 2,550 mAh battery provides approximately 14.5 hours on the same duty cycle and is a direct drop-in upgrade, adding only a small amount of depth to the radio profile.
