Business Two Way Radio Frequency Chart

Take a few minutes to read our comprehensive guide to business radio frequencies, which includes a basic two way radio frequency chart. The chart includes all of the vital information you'll need to make an informed choice as to which two-way radio is best for your business or for your personal use. Two way radios come in all shapes and sizes and are available in three types of frequency bands: UHF Radios, VHF Radios and Digital Radios - 900MHz ISM. The most important thing to consider is: How to choose the correct two-way radio for your communication applications.

Business Two-Way Radio Frequencies Chart

Before you purchase a business walkie-talkie, it is important to understand the different radio frequencies that are available and the advantages and disadvantages of each. Our radio frequency range chart offers a simple overview..

Frequency

Range

Advantages

VHF

30 MHz – 300 MHz

Wider signal range over open areas that are free of obstructions

UHF

300 MHz – 3 GHz

Penetrates metal, concrete and wood; best for indoor use or indoor/outdoor use

900MHz ISM

902–907 and 915-928 MHz.

Allows 1-to-1 and 1-to-many communications; can transmit data as well as voice; clear signal over entire range; no FCC license fee

For a listing of all assigned frequencies and their intended uses, see the FCC Online Table of Frequency Allocations.

VHF Radios For Outdoor Use

VHF frequencies are between 30 MHz and 300 MHz. Two-way radios that use this frequency range are best for outdoor use, since VHF radio waves travel about twice as far on open ground, rolling hills and through foliage as UHF & 900MHz ISM waves. However, they're not as good at penetrating structural things like walls, buildings and urban terrain. Use VHF walkie-talkies when you plan to use your walkie-talkies exclusively outdoors.

Note: If you already have VHF radios, you'll need to purchase additional VHF radios so that they can speak to each other. VHF talks to VHF only, UHF radios talk to UHF radios And 900 MHz talk to 900MHz walkie-talkies.

UHF Radios for Indoor Use (or Indoor/Outdoor Use)

For a listing of all assigned frequencies and their intended uses, see the FCC Online Table of Frequency Allocations.

VHF Radios For Outdoor Use

VHF frequencies are between 30 MHz and 300 MHz. Two-way radios that use this frequency range are best for outdoor use, since VHF radio waves travel about twice as far on open ground, rolling hills and through foliage as UHF or 900MHz ISM waves. However, they're not as good at penetrating structural things like walls, buildings and urban terrain. They can also be difficult to use in heavily wooded areas, such as forests, or in mountainous regions. In general, use VHF walkie-talkies when you plan to use your walkie-talkies exclusively outdoors.

For strictly indoor use or indoor/outdoor combined use, UHF (300 MHz to 3 GHz) is a smarter choice than VHF. This is because the higher frequencies can more easily penetrate wood, concrete and metal, giving you a clearer signal inside buildings and in urban areas that have many obstructions. They're also a great choice if you plan to use your radios both indoors and out. Use UHF two-way radios inside office buildings, warehouses, retail stores, restaurants, malls, hotels, schools and hospitals. They're also a smart choice for security teams, which may need to access various parts of buildings and grounds.

900MHz ISM Digital Radios for Flexibility, Wide Range and Clear Signals

For the latest in two-way radio technology, consider digital radios. The 900MHz ISM frequency range (also known as the 33-centimeter band) has several advantages over VHF and UHF. A digital radio operating on the 900 MHz frequency band lets you speak to many people at once or to just a single person depending on your needs. Digital radios are able to transmit and receive data in addition to voice communications, making them one of the most flexile options on the market. The signal from a digital radio remains clear throughout the entire range, and they do not require an FCC license to operate, making them cost-effective and an extremely attractive option for businesses looking to streamline their communications. Certain radios (such as the Motorola DTR series) uses Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum (FHSS) can be used to enhance security and minimize interference.

Business or Pleasure: Choose the Best Radio for Your Use

If you plan on using your walkie-talkies for a business application then you'll want to buy a commercial two-way radio. Commercial grade walkie-talkies are designed to handle the rigors of heavy-duty use. They are built with durable bodies and basic features that are important to business users. Business radios also use specific business-exclusive frequencies, which eliminates interference and makes them more secure than standard home-use radios. Two companies that offer exceptionally well-designed radios for business use are Kenwood radio and Motorola. Business radio frequencies combined with advanced features give professional organizations the edge over their competitors. Business radios can increase productivity and efficiency by keeping staff connected so they can deliver a rapid response in customer service applications and work together as a strong team.
