Key Features

Channels & Programming

16-channel capacity

Supports up to 16 programmable channels across 1 zone, each individually configurable with different frequencies, groups, and features to match your operation's layout.

Programmable buttons

Assignable side buttons can be configured for one-touch access to scan, monitor, squelch toggle, power level, talkaround, VOX, voice announcement, and more.

Scan capability

Scans up to 3 scan lists with a maximum of 16 channels each. Supports both manual (Main Channel) and Auto Scan modes across analog and digital channels.

Communication & Audio

Push-to-Talk (PTT)

Dedicated PTT button enables instant group calls, private calls, all calls, broadcast voice calls, and OVCM calls. Channel Free Indication alerts you the moment a channel opens.

Voice Operating Transmission (VOX)

Hands-free, voice-activated transmit activates automatically when the microphone detects speech — essential for workers who cannot spare a hand to key a radio.

Voice announcements

Plays zone and channel announcement audio on channel changes — particularly useful on the non-keypad form factor where there is no display to confirm your selected channel.

Talkaround mode

Bypasses the repeater and enables direct radio-to-radio communication when your repeater is unavailable or when you're within direct talk range of other units.

Monitoring & Range Management

Multi-color LED status indicator

Color-coded LED provides at-a-glance status for transmitting (solid green), receiving (blinking green), scanning (blinking yellow), low battery / emergency (blinking red), and out-of-range (blinking red with ARTS).

Auto-Range Transponder System (ARTS)

Analog-mode feature that periodically exchanges signals with other ARTS-equipped radios and alerts you with a tone and LED when your radio moves out of range of the group.

Adjustable squelch

Toggle between Normal and Tight squelch via a programmable button. Tight squelch filters background noise and weak signals; normal squelch maximizes reach from distant radios.

Monitor & Permanent Monitor

Monitor mode lets you check a channel is clear before transmitting. Permanent Monitor continuously listens to a selected channel for all radio traffic until manually disabled.

Power Management

Li-Ion battery (switchable to NiMH)

Ships with a Li-Ion battery. The Battery Type button allows software selection between Li-Ion and NiMH battery types so you can run either chemistry depending on available inventory.

High / Low power levels

Toggle transmit power between High and Low via a programmable button — use High for maximum range and Low to conserve battery life in close-range environments.

Who Is This Radio For?

Outdoor Operations and Campus Teams

VHF signals propagate well across open ground and through foliage, making the CP100d-VA a strong fit for outdoor operations: parks, agricultural facilities, universities, military-adjacent facilities, resort properties, and large campuses where teams are frequently in the open rather than inside dense buildings.

Operations Running Mixed Analog/Digital Fleets

The CP100d-VA's dual-mode capability allows organizations to program some channels in analog (for backward compatibility with legacy radios) and others in DMR digital — eliminating the need for immediate full fleet replacement when upgrading.

Workers Who Need Hands-Free Communication

VOX activation means the radio transmits the moment voice is detected — no need to press PTT. Combined with the non-keypad form factor, the CP100d-VA suits roles where physical interaction with the radio is limited: equipment operators, warehouse pickers, trades workers, and outdoor maintenance crews.

Small Teams Moving From Consumer to Commercial Radios

Organizations stepping up from FRS/GMRS bubble-pack radios will find the CP100d-VA a substantial upgrade: programmable frequencies, commercial audio clarity, durable construction, and accessory compatibility with a full Motorola ecosystem.

How Does the CP100d-VA Compare to Similar Radios?

CP100d-VA (VHF Digital) vs. CP100d-UA (UHF Analog)

The CP100d-UA is the UHF analog-only version of this radio. UHF penetrates concrete and steel better, making it superior for indoor facilities, warehouses, and multi-story buildings. The CP100d-VA's VHF band offers better outdoor range across open terrain and through vegetation. If your primary operating environment is outdoors, VHF is generally the stronger choice.

CP100d-VA vs. CP100d-V (VHF Analog-Only)

The CP100d-VA adds DMR digital mode capability on top of analog. If your current operation is entirely analog with no plans to expand into digital, the analog-only VHF model may offer a simpler, lower-cost entry point. If there is any chance you will need digital compatibility — for cleaner audio, longer talk time, or integration with a larger Motorola MOTOTRBO system — the CP100d-VA is the more future-proof choice.

CP100d-VA vs. Motorola CLS1110

The CLS1110 is a compact, business-exclusive VHF radio operating at 1 watt on pre-set frequencies — easy to deploy but inflexible. The CP100d-VA allows programming to any licensable VHF frequency, supports digital mode, and uses significantly more output power. For teams that need frequency control, digital capability, or integration with a broader radio system, the CP100d-VA is the more capable platform.

CP100d-VA vs. Kenwood NX-P1200NVK

Kenwood's NX-P1200 is the most directly comparable VHF commercial entry-level radio, supporting both analog and NXDN digital out of the box. Note that NXDN (Kenwood's proprietary digital protocol) is not cross-compatible with Motorola DMR digital systems. If your broader radio ecosystem is Motorola MOTOTRBO, the CP100d-VA's DMR protocol ensures interoperability. If you have no existing radio infrastructure, both are worth evaluating on merit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the CP100d-VA support digital mode?

No. The CP100d-VA supports VHF analog only.

See the full CP100d series page for a model comparison.

What frequency band does the CP100d-VA use?

The CP100d-VA operates in the VHF (Very High Frequency) band. VHF signals propagate well across open terrain and through vegetation, making this model well-suited for outdoor operations, campuses, parks, agriculture, and facilities where teams work across open ground rather than inside dense multi-story buildings.

If your primary environment is indoors — warehouses, hotels, manufacturing plants — the CP100d-UA (UHF) typically delivers better building penetration.

How many channels does the CP100d-VA support?

The CP100d-VA supports up to 16 programmable channels organized within 1 zone. Each channel can be configured with a unique frequency, CTCSS/DCS privacy tone, group assignment, and feature set. The Channel Selector Knob on the radio navigates between channels without the need for a keypad.

The radio also supports up to 3 scan lists, each containing a maximum of 16 channel entries, allowing it to monitor multiple channels simultaneously in scan mode.

Can the CP100d-VA communicate with our existing radios?

In analog mode, the CP100d-VA communicates with any VHF analog radio programmed to the same frequency and CTCSS/DCS tone — including compatible radios from Kenwood, Icom, Hytera, and other manufacturers. It will not communicate out-of-the-box with UHF radios, consumer FRS/GMRS radios, or radios using incompatible digital protocols.

In digital mode, the CP100d-VA uses the DMR (Digital Mobile Radio) standard, which enables interoperability with other DMR-compatible radios on the same talkgroup — including radios from other manufacturers that support DMR Tier II.

What accessories are compatible with the CP100d-VA?

The CP100d-VA uses a 2-pin accessory connector compatible with a wide range of Motorola MOTOTRBO accessories. Refer to the compatible accessories section above for the full list available at Tech Wholesale, including earpieces, remote speaker microphones, surveillance kits, headsets, batteries, and chargers.

What is VOX and when should I use it?

VOX (Voice Operating Transmission) is a hands-free transmit mode. When VOX is enabled, the radio automatically begins transmitting whenever the microphone on a VOX-capable accessory detects your voice — you don't need to press the PTT button. When you stop speaking, the radio stops transmitting after a brief programmed period.

VOX is ideal for workers who cannot spare a hand to key the radio: equipment operators, trades workers, food service staff, or anyone wearing gloves. It can be toggled on and off via a programmable button or by pressing the PTT button (which disables VOX for that transmission).

Can the CP100d-VA be reprogrammed after purchase?

Yes. Programming requires a Windows PC, the Motorola CPS (Customer Programming Software — available as a free download from Motorola Solutions), and a Motorola PMKN4128 USB programming cable (sold separately). The radio can be reprogrammed as many times as needed whenever frequencies, channel assignments, or feature configurations change.

Tech Wholesale can also assist with programming services — contact us for details.

What does the LED indicator tell me?

The multi-color LED on the CP100d-VA provides real-time operational status at a glance:

  • Solid green: Transmitting / powering up / full battery (when battery button pressed)
  • Blinking green: Receiving a call or detecting over-the-air activity
  • Solid yellow: Monitoring a channel / Li-Ion battery type selected / fair battery charge
  • Blinking yellow: Scanning / unanswered Call Alert / Flexible Receive List enabled
  • Double blinking yellow: Searching for a new site / unanswered Group Call Alert / radio locked
  • Blinking red: Self-test failed / receiving emergency transmission / transmitting on low battery / ARTS out-of-range
