Product Information

What Is the Motorola CLP1010e?

The Motorola CLP1010e is a 1-channel, 1-watt UHF analog business two-way radio designed for discreet on-site communication in environments where a visible antenna or external speaker would be inappropriate — including restaurants, retail stores, medical offices, hotels, and event venues. Operating on 90 business-exclusive UHF frequencies (450–470 MHz), it delivers coverage of up to 100,000 square feet or 10 floors indoors, routes all audio through a wired earpiece (no external speaker), and runs up to 18 hours on its 1800 mAh lithium-ion battery.

It is the enhanced successor to the discontinued CLP1010, adding IP54 weather resistance, MIL-STD-810H certification, and a relocated Smart Status Glow Ring around the PTT button.

The Motorola CLP1010e is sold on TechWholesale.com.

Who Is This Radio For?

Restaurant and Food Service Teams

The CLP1010e was purpose-built for this environment. No external speaker means kitchen conversations don't carry into the dining room. The antimicrobial housing addresses food safety concerns. VOX hands-free operation lets servers and kitchen staff communicate without putting down plates or utensils. The compact form factor doesn't interfere with uniforms.

Medical Offices, Dental Practices, and Healthcare Clinics

All audio stays private through the earpiece, which supports HIPAA compliance requirements for protecting patient information in hallways and shared spaces. The antimicrobial housing is appropriate for hygiene-sensitive environments. Lightweight at 3.35 oz, it doesn't interfere with clinical workflows. Compatible UHF frequencies allow integration with existing Motorola CLS or CP100d fleets already in use.

Retail Stores and Hotel Properties

A radio that looks like a business tool rather than a construction site walkie-talkie matters on a retail floor or hotel lobby. The CLP1010e's slim profile and concealed antenna keep staff looking professional. Coverage up to 100,000 sqft handles most single-building retail environments without a repeater. For larger properties, a repeater extends that to 250,000 sqft.

Event and Venue Staff

Theaters, convention centers, and event venues need discreet coordination tools that don't distract guests. Earpiece-only audio, 6 call tones to differentiate departments, and 18-hour battery life make the CLP1010e a practical fit for event-day operations.

Regulatory and Compliance Details

The CLP1010e operates under FCC Part 90 (Land Mobile Radio Service) on business-exclusive UHF frequencies in the 450–470 MHz band. This is not a license-free radio — it is not FRS, GMRS, or MURS. Licenses are issued by the FCC through its Universal Licensing System (ULS) and are typically site-specific. A license is not required to purchase radios.

  • FCC ID: AZ489FT4960
  • Regulatory Part: FCC Part 90
  • Frequency Band: UHF 450–470 MHz (business-exclusive)
  • License Type Required: FCC Part 90 Land Mobile

The advantage of Part 90 licensing over license-free alternatives (FRS/GMRS) is dedicated frequency assignment — your channels are coordinated to minimize interference with other licensees in your area. Tech Wholesale can assist with frequency coordination when you purchase. For more on FCC licensing for business radios, see the FCC's ULS licensing portal.

HIPAA Compatibility. The earpiece-only audio design prevents conversations from being overheard in shared spaces, which supports HIPAA compliance in healthcare settings, in addition to privacy codes. Consult your facility's compliance officer for full program requirements.

MIL-STD-810H. The CLP1010e meets Military Standard 810H for shock, vibration, humidity, and temperature extremes — the most current revision of this standard at time of the radio's release.

How Does It Compare to Similar Radios?

Motorola CLP1010e vs. Motorola CLP1080e

The CLP1080e is the 8-channel version of the same platform. If your operation needs to separate departments (front-of-house vs. kitchen, housekeeping vs. front desk), the CLP1080e is the upgrade. The physical design, battery, IP rating, and accessory ecosystem are identical — the only functional difference is channel count. For single-team operations, the CLP1010e's simplicity is an advantage; for multi-department coordination, the CLP1080e is worth the additional cost.

Motorola CLP1010e vs. Motorola CLS1110

The CLS1110 has an external speaker and does not require an earpiece, which makes it more versatile for environments where hands-free audio is acceptable (warehouses, back-of-house, outdoor events). The CLP1010e is lighter and more discreet. Both operate on compatible UHF frequencies, so they can be used together in a mixed fleet. Choose CLS1110 when discretion isn't required; choose CLP1010e when it is.

Motorola CLP1010e vs. Motorola Curve (DLR110)

The Curve operates on 900 MHz FHSS (frequency-hopping spread spectrum) and is license-free. It offers stronger in-building penetration in some structures and better resistance to eavesdropping. However, it cannot interoperate with UHF radios already in a fleet. For new deployments where license administration is a burden, the DLR is worth considering. For businesses already running UHF infrastructure, the CLP1010e fits in without re-coordinating frequencies.

Does the Motorola CLP1010e require an FCC license?

Yes, technically. The CLP1010e is a Part 90 business radio operating on licensed UHF frequencies. It is not FRS, GMRS, or any other license-free service. A license is not required to purchase radios. Tech Wholesale can assist with frequency selection at time of purchase. Learn more at the FCC's wireless licensing page.

Does the CLP1010e work with other radios I already own?

It will interoperate with any UHF radio programmed to the same frequencies and interference eliminator (CTCSS/DPL) codes — regardless of brand. Compatible Motorola models include the CLS1110, CLS1410, RDU2020, RDU2080d, RDU4100, and RDU4160d, among others. For cross-brand compatibility, confirm that both radios support the same UHF frequencies and can be programmed to matching CTCSS/DPL codes. Contact us and we can confirm before you order.

Can the CLP1010e be used without the earpiece?

No. There is no external speaker on the CLP1010e. The radio transmits and receives audio exclusively through the wired earpiece. This is a deliberate design choice for environments where privacy and discretion matter. If your team needs a radio that can be used without an earpiece, consider the Motorola CLS1110 or RDU2020.

How do I program the CLP1010e?

Programming requires Motorola's Customer Programming Software (CPS) and the HKKN4027 programming cable. CPS is available as a free download from Motorola Solutions. Through CPS, you can configure operating frequencies, CTCSS/DPL interference eliminator codes, VOX sensitivity, call tones, and other parameters. The HKPN4007 6-unit charging tray also supports cloning — once one radio is configured, you can clone settings to additional units simultaneously. See Motorola's step-by-step CLPe programming guide for full instructions.

What is the actual battery life, and how do I extend it?

Under typical use, the standard 1800 mAh lithium-ion battery delivers up to 18 hours — enough for a full shift including a double. For teams running shifts longer than 18 hours or operating in high-transmission environments, the optional HKNN4013 high-capacity battery provides extended runtime. To maximize battery longevity over time: charge via the stand-up tray rather than leaving radios in a powered dock indefinitely, turn the radio off while charging, and avoid deep discharge. The Smart Status Glow Ring provides real-time battery level indication: green (70–100%), yellow (30–70%), red (10–30%), flashing red (below 10%).

Is the CLP1010e HIPAA compliant?

The radio's earpiece-only audio design means conversations cannot be overheard by patients or bystanders, which is directly relevant to HIPAA's Privacy Rule requirements for protecting protected health information (PHI) in incidental disclosures. The antimicrobial housing also reduces surface contamination risk. The CLP1010e's design characteristics support a HIPAA-compliant communications workflow.

What happens if a radio is dropped or gets wet?

The CLP1010e carries an IP54 rating, meaning it is protected against dust ingress and water splashing from any direction. It also meets MIL-STD-810H standards for shock and vibration. It is not submersible — do not submerge it in water or use it in heavy rain for extended periods. For environments with heavier exposure to moisture or liquids, consider an intrinsically safe or higher-IP-rated radio. See intrinsically safe radio options if your environment requires it.

Can I use a repeater with the CLP1010e to extend coverage?

Yes. The CLP1010e is repeater-capable. With a compatible UHF repeater, indoor coverage extends from 100,000 sq ft to approximately 250,000 sq ft (10 floors to 20 floors). This makes larger hotels, hospitals, department stores, or multi-wing facilities viable without upgrading to a higher-power radio. Contact us for repeater recommendations based on your facility layout.
