Who Is This For?

Construction Site Supervisors and Crew Leads

Teams operating on active job sites need a radio that can withstand drops, dust, heat, and rain while cutting through the noise of power tools and heavy equipment. The R2-UA's MIL-STD 810 certification, IP55 protection, SINC+ noise suppression, and Lone Worker Protection make it well-suited for construction environments where communication and crew safety are both critical. The 4-watt output and UHF band provide reliable penetration through concrete structures.

Warehouse and Manufacturing Operations

Large distribution centers and manufacturing plants require radios that can communicate across multiple floors and through metal shelving, equipment, and dense building materials. The R2-UA's UHF band is engineered for exactly these conditions, with a rated indoor range of up to 400,000 square feet and 40 floors. The 64-channel capacity supports organizing communications by department, shift, or zone without crosstalk.

Security and Facilities Teams

Security personnel patrolling large facilities, campuses, or event venues benefit from the R2-UA's discreet form factor, access to surveillance kit accessories, Remote Monitor capability, and Emergency Alert functionality. Organizations already running CP200d-based fleets can deploy the R2-UA alongside existing hardware and accessories without a full system overhaul.

Existing CP200d Fleet Operators Upgrading Infrastructure

Any organization currently running Motorola CP200d radios can migrate to the R2-UA with minimal cost and retraining. The R2-UA uses the same form factor, the same 2-pin accessory connector, and is fully compatible with all existing CP200d accessories including audio accessories, batteries, and cases. The user interface is intentionally familiar to reduce transition time.

How Does the Motorola R2-UA Compare to Similar Radios?

Motorola R2-UA vs. Motorola CP200d

The R2-UA is Motorola's direct replacement for the CP200d. The CP200d is an analog-only radio; the R2-UA adds DMR digital capability, Dual Capacity Direct Mode, enhanced SINC+ noise suppression, and Lone Worker Protection. Battery life on the R2-UA is significantly longer — up to 26.5 hours in digital mode versus the CP200d's 12–16 hours. Importantly, all CP200d accessories are compatible with the R2-UA, so existing fleet operators do not need to replace cables, audio accessories, or cases. For teams on CP200d hardware, the R2-UA is the natural upgrade path.

Motorola R2-UA vs. Motorola XPR 3300e/3500e

The XPR 3300e and 3500e are higher-tier MOTOTRBO digital radios that add features such as Bluetooth audio, integrated GPS, and a larger display with text messaging. The R2-UA is simpler and more durable for frontline industrial use — it lacks Bluetooth and GPS but offers comparable audio performance, the same MIL-STD 810 durability, and a lower per-unit cost. For teams that need basic to mid-tier digital voice communication without advanced data features, the R2-UA is the more economical choice.

Motorola R2-UA vs. Motorola RDX Series

The Motorola RDX series (RDU4100, RDU2020) is designed for on-site retail and light commercial use on a limited set of pre-programmed UHF business frequencies. RDX radios are simpler but offer far fewer channels (up to 8), lower customizability, and no digital mode. The R2-UA is significantly more capable — with 64 channels, dual analog/digital operation, advanced noise suppression, and full safety features — and is the appropriate choice for demanding industrial or security environments.

Motorola R2-UA vs. Kenwood NX-P1000

The Kenwood NX-P1000 is a comparable mid-tier business radio with dual analog/digital support and similar durability ratings. The NX-P1000 supports NXDN digital as well as DMR, giving it broader interoperability with certain Kenwood digital systems. The Motorola R2-UA has an edge in audio loudness (101 phons) and in accessory ecosystem depth — particularly for organizations already using Motorola infrastructure. The better choice depends on existing fleet compatibility and specific digital protocol requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Motorola R2-UA a direct replacement for the CP200d?

Yes. Motorola designed the R2-UA as the upgrade replacement for the CP200d. It shares the same form factor and 2-pin accessory connector, meaning all existing CP200d audio accessories — earpieces, remote speaker microphones, cables, and carry cases — are fully compatible.

The user interface is intentionally similar to minimize retraining. The R2-UA adds DMR digital capability, significantly longer battery life, and advanced safety features that the CP200d does not have.

What is the difference between the analog and digital modes on the R2-UA?

In analog mode, the R2-UA behaves like a conventional analog business radio. In digital (DMR) mode, it uses ETSI DMR time-division technology, which provides clearer audio at the edge of coverage, longer battery life (digital mode uses less power), and access to advanced features such as Enhanced Privacy, Dual Capacity Direct Mode, and RX Audio Leveling.

Individual channels can be programmed as analog or digital, so teams can maintain backward compatibility with analog radios on the same system.

What does IP55 mean, and is the R2-UA waterproof?

IP55 is an ingress protection rating defined by IEC standard 60529. The first digit (5) indicates protection against dust ingress sufficient to prevent dust from interfering with operation. The second digit (5) indicates protection against water projected from a nozzle in any direction.

The R2-UA is not rated for submersion — it is not waterproof in the way that an IP67 or IP68 radio would be. It is designed to withstand rain and splashing in outdoor work environments.

For a full explanation of IP and military durability codes, see our guide: IP Ratings and Military Codes Explained.

How many radios can be programmed to work together, and can they communicate with other Motorola models?

The R2-UA supports up to 64 channels. In analog mode, it can communicate with any Motorola radio (or compatible radio from another manufacturer) operating on the same frequency and tone settings, including CP200d, BPR40, and RDX series radios.

In digital DMR mode, it can communicate with other DMR-standard radios. It will not communicate directly with MURS, FRS, or GMRS consumer radios, or with Motorola DLR/DTR radios that operate on 900 MHz.

What safety features are built into the R2-UA for worker protection?

The R2-UA includes four key safety functions.

The Emergency Alert Button sends an immediate distress signal to designated contacts.

Lone Worker Protection triggers an alert if the radio detects no activity (no button presses or transmissions) within a configurable time interval — useful for solo workers in hazardous areas.

Transmit Interrupt allows a supervisor or dispatcher to break into any ongoing transmission to deliver a priority message.

Remote Monitor enables authorized personnel to silently open a radio's microphone to check on a worker's status without the worker needing to respond.

Can the R2-UA be used with a repeater to extend range?

Yes. The R2-UA supports repeater operation, which can significantly extend coverage beyond the radio's direct 3–5 mile outdoor range.

Repeaters receive a signal on one frequency and retransmit it on another, effectively relaying communication across larger facilities or geographic areas.

Tech Wholesale carries compatible repeater systems for organizations that need extended coverage. Contact us for a system design consultation.

Is custom radio programming available, and is it required?

The R2-UA ships with default factory settings. Custom programming maps your frequencies, tone codes (CTCSS/DCS), channel labels, and feature configurations to your specific operation.

However, most business deployments benefit from custom programming to match frequencies, set up channel zones, and configure safety features.

Tech Wholesale offers custom programming as an add-on at checkout.
